About UNPA

In early 1991, a group of Utah dietary supplement executives met to discuss the growing state of emergency surrounding the dietary supplement industry. FDA seemed intent on attacking a growing range of products and companies, even doctors’ clinics. Their goals: treat many herbs as drugs, limit the potency of amino acids and make health statements of any kind illegal for all supplements. Having looked at all options, this group concluded the only real solution was to change the law. Their resolve led to the formation of an organization which was named the Utah Natural Products Alliance and elected Loren lsraelsen Executive Director. This group, often called the “Utah Group,” hired the best lawyers
and lobbyists available and set about to help craft a legislative model that would recognize dietary supplements and consumer rights of access to these products. UNPA called on its good friend, Senator Orrin Hatch, who quickly agreed to sponsor legislation. After two and a half years of intense battling, and with the extraordinary support of the entire dietary supplement industry and its consumers, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act became law in November of 1994.

Since then, UNPA’s efforts have been focused on:

bullet Advancement of product quality and safety by advances in analytical method technology,
competence of certificates of analysis, development of certified reference materials.

bullet Advising the FDA, FTC, NIH and other government agencies involved in DSHEA implementation     or related matters.

bullet Co-founding the International Alliance of Dietary Supplement Associations (IADSA) in 1998.

bullet Holding a series of well-regarded seminars on issues ranging from AER management to the
    challenge of China.

bullet Developing a collaboration with Utah’s higher educational system to create a career path
gateway for students interested in a dietary supplement career.

bullet Actively supporting and negotiating for passage of the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004.

bullet Working closely with organizations such as the Direct Selling Association to respond to
threats such as the current Business Opportunity Rule proposed by FTC.

bullet Producing directories and statistical information on the $4.2 billion Utah dietary supplement
    industry.

bullet Maintaining close ties to Utah’s Congressional delegation.

In 2006, UNPA was renamed the United Natural Products Alliance to reflect its international
membership (12 states and 7 countries). Our offices are based in Salt Lake City with
a staff of eight.

Our principal work is to unite the best dietary supplement companies in the world in a
common effort to bring safety, science, quality and respect to the U.S. and global dietary
supplement marketplace.
